One topic that we talked during Ms. Kobus’ lecture was over adversity and sticking together. These were huge themes in the movie. The three ladies, Taraji P. Henson as Katherine G. Johnson, Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle MonĂ¡e as Mary Jackson, stuck together in the movie and used each other for support to get their personal goals achieved while also helping the situation for black females in NASA.
One line from the movie that stuck with me was when Dorothy was complaining to Mary and Katherine when Katherine had just been promoted because she thought she deserved to be promoted to be the supervisor of the West Area Computers. When she realized it was not just a good thing for Katherine she said: “Any upward movement is movement for us all.” She meant with this that if a black female is thriving and doing things no other has done it helps all of the black females in every field. Someone needs to be the first to do something and after that, it is not that special anymore and becomes more normal. It must be shown that it is possible before others with not as clear of a vision of something can do it.
