This week in Women Studies the topic of the intense and controversial topic of abortion was discussed. The documentary Reversing Roe talks heavily about this topic of abortion and the restrictions and how some believe it is illegal. A scene that stuck with me was in the courthouse room in Austin, Texas when everyone that was in the packed courtroom started making noise and it felt like they were all together for a cause they care so deeply for and the concept of unity was very prominent throughout it. Illegal abortions were also a topic that stood out to me and the fact that 5,000 women died a year as a result of that in the '60s. Another fact that stood out to me was that some women would have to get sterilized after an abortion in the '60s. Many of these women were African American women which once again just demonstrates the way in which race played a role in even basic human rights such as these.
To me, I feel that women hold the power to choose what to do to their bodies. Abortion has nothing to do with politics or what side you are own but rather have a say in what happens inside of you which to me is just a basic human right. It is their bodies, and it is 10000% their own personal and individual choice to do what they feel is right. I feel as though some fail to realize that ending abortions doesn't end abortions but rather just ends the way to safe abortions. Women hold a right to choose what grows and come out of their bodies and they have a right to themselves.
