Growing up being able to get an abortion was always an untouchable right to women in my eyes. It was the law and it always had seemed that way to me. The more I grew up the more I realized the legalization of abortion was still extremely controversial and could change. The thought of abortion being illegal again is shocking to me. It bothers and frightens me that a choice that could effect my body could be taken away from me because certain people in our country believe my choice and my body is their responsibility. What I decide to do with my body should be in my control and should be my decision. It is frightening that the next president could be the deciding factor as to whether or not my choice is going to be taken away from me. I do not believe this topic should be created into a huge political argument, abortion has nothing to do with politics but everything to do with a woman's choice on her body and her life. A woman should feel like she has control over her own body and should not allow her government to take this control away from her.
In the documentary we watched this week I was really inspired by the doctor who was traveling around the country to preform abortions. She would testify in courts showing political officials the facts behind the science of abortions. She did not dwell on the political argument but instead only supported the science and evidence that shows the importance of abortions. She talks about how she doesn't believe this argument is a political one and should not be in the hands of our government to make. I was also shocked to learn and watch about the way people acted when Roe V. Wade was first passed. It was shocking to learn there were groups of people that would come and scream hateful things at women trying to enter a clinic. They would line up on the property line of the clinics protesting the doctors and the women entering. The videos displayed showed men and women crawling on the ground at the women entering the clinics. This display of hatred towards women for making decisions on their own bodies was shocking to me. It scares me that this type of thing could happen again one day. These groups are still in effect, protesting outside of clinics all over the country. While abortions are still legal, many states are passing more and more restrictions on getting abortions making it almost impossible to actually be able to get one. Many states are down to only one clinic that will preform abortions.
The idea that abortions may be illegal is horrible in many ways to me. In light of the me too movement, sexual assault happens everyday in our country and is a horrible thing that can has serious effects on a person. If a woman is rapped and then becomes pregnant she should be able to have the choice to not have a child that was a product of a horrible incident in her life. Not being able to make this choice would leave victims of rape with a constant reminder of what someone had done to them.
The documentary was very interesting to me and I was fascinated by the things I had not known on this subject before. Abortion rights is something I will always feel very strong about. Abortion rights is the right for women to have control over their own bodies and their own lives. The government should not be in charge of this decision and choice. Having abortions be legal does not mean all women will get abortions but it means women will have the right to choose and be able to choose their own path in life and be able to choose what they want to do with their own body.
