The Supreme Court case Roe v Wade is the only Supreme Court case that I know of by name and know what it is about. It is a court case that I have heard about in history since my first year at Govs. I never really understood what the big deal about legalizing abortions was until last year's election when I had an argument with a senior (Class of 2017) who is pro-life. Coming from a country where getting an abortion during the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy is pretty easy if you really need to get one, I never saw the whole abortion issue as that big of a deal.
After Mr. Doggett’s presentation on Monday night, I left the classroom more aware of the whole issue in this country and how different people might view it. But more importantly, I learned more about the court case itself and what lead to it and what affected the outcome. The debate is more than complicated with people on one side fighting for the rights of women and on the other the rights of an unborn child.
My opinion on the whole thing is that I believe that women should be allowed to get an abortion during the couple first months of the pregnancy for valid reasons, like health, economic, family or because of the woman’s age. It should be the woman’s choice and the Government should not be allowed to take that right away. I think it is important for women to have this right because in modern day there are more women in the workforce and having an unplanned baby can be a huge roadblock for women who are trying to thrive in their fields of work. More importantly, why the whole case confuses me is that during the case it was only men making the decisions about women’s health care.
