Roe v Wade is a landmark case that effects thousands of people every year. Walking into class I thought I had a pretty good knowledge and understanding of the case, especially after watching the video that was sent about the case. But it was interesting to learn about the cases before it that paved the way for this landmark decision. Skinner v Oklahoma and Griswold v Connecticut were really important cases that not only helped Roe v wade but I feel can be used to prove points for many other cases. The right to privacy is an important right and I think it's interesting that not until this case was it ever formally known as a right. Not only could the right to privacy be used for abortion but also in cases of interracial relationships and gay relationships at the time, people have the right to do what they want and have privacy when they make their choices, the impact of these cases has shaped the way we think about privacy and what we're allowed to do in private.
I think it's interesting that in Roe v Wade itself Jane Roe (Norma McCorvey) was not the usual poster child that lawyers wanted for a case. I think it would make sense to choose her though, as she represents the different woman who need it and also represents the women who can't afford to get a "safe" illegal one. She represents a widely forgotten group of women in that time and I think in choosing her a lot of women like her rallied around the fact that McCorvey was making such an impact. The issue of abortion in general is one that goes on every year even though it's been over 40 years since the decision. For many women, having and taking care of a child is a burden too big for them. McCorvey is a perfect example of a woman who could barely take care of herself let alone a child. Personally I think this reason alone is good enough to why abortion should be legal. In class we talked about the case of Casey v Planned Parenthood the court decided that an "undo burden" can't be placed on women. A child should be an exciting, happy, and beautiful new chapter of your life and if it feels like a burden or something you don't want, then it's unfair to require you to have it. A lot of people use adoption as a way to justify not having abortions, but being pregnant for 9 months and giving birth can still deeply impact your life. If your job is one that doesn't allow you to take time off and a job where you have to be on your feet a lot, it will be really difficult to continue to have that job, especially as it gets closer to the due date. Another important factor is that abortion is a traumatizing experience for everyone. No one wants to abort a child but it's a necessary evil, I think a lot of people don't realize that deciding and getting one is probably one of the hardest things a women does in her life. Abortion is a right that I think all women should be entitled to.
