Christiana Morgan

Christina Morgan is best understood through her psychology and artwork. Morgan's interest in psychology led her to the famous psychologist Carl Jung. Her relationship with Jung deeply impacted her interest in symbolic imagery. In her personal artwork, she explored concepts that aligned closely with Jungian theory. Under Jung's guidance, Morgan underwent what Jung called "active imagination" where she explored her unconscious mind. Jung saw her as a muse and believed she was more able than other people to tap into her deepest lays of collective consciousness. This led her to create a series of vivid drawings which Jung used in his "Vision Seminars". Her most notable work came while working with Henry Murray of Harvard University. Together, they developed the Thematic Apperception Test(TAT). The TAT is a psychological test used to discover an individual's underlying motives and views of society. In this test, a patient is presented with a purposely ambiguous drawing and asked to explain what is going on in it. Morgan designed many of the original drawings for this test which helped shape the test moving forward. At the time, Murray was credited with the majority of the work but Morgan has been credited with more as time has passed.

Later in her life, Morgan constructed the Morgan Tower, which is luckily positioned on our campus. Alongside the marsh, Morgan used this construction as a sort of portfolio compiling all of her work and beliefs. The video gives a very chilling feeling within the tower. Her artwork is everywhere, riddled with symbolism from her Jungian beliefs. I think Gov's plan to restore the tower is a very good idea. I hope they can put it to good use for future humanities students because I would have loved to be able to learn inside the tower around her artwork.
