The second wave feminism, as Ms. O'Connell talks about, is a period in the 1960s and 70s that focuses on the women gaining a significant growth of rights and power. The equal pay act of 1963, Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and many more acts were passed during these two decades. The idea is that after the war women wanted to work, make money, and become more independent from their male counterparts. Furthermore, these acts help close the wage gap between men and women during this time specifically. Now, with all of these acts being passed people, in particular, feminists claim that the average women make 82 cents for ever dollar a man makes. In fact, however, this statistic is not completely correct. There are many factors that come into play when you measure the difference between the wages. For example, college major, occupation, and other differences, it becomes around 95-96%. In the 60s and 70s wage gap discrimination was a thing, but with all of these bills being passed, the wage gap discrimination, in fact, is negligible. People fail to realize the differences in the jobs women and men tend to occupy. Men, for example, are more lenient to doing jobs that require lots of labor such as construction, which can pay more than being a teacher, which women to lean towards more. Furthermore, the wage gap in 2020, is extremely negligible. There are 1 or 2 cases of this happening, but there is so much legislation that prevents employers from discrimination based on sex and race.
There is no doubt, however, that there has been wage gap discrimination during the second wave feminism movement, but I do believe, however, that things have gotten better, but still people do exaggerate the discrepancy between wage a little too much.
In conclusion, the role of women has been more progressive and independent from their male counterparts and the difference between women and men has closed significantly and the gender roles have become neutral. I believe that these waves of feminism will come to an end because the roles of men and women are being intertwined, men and can do feminine things and vice versa, and soon their will be no difference.
