"Stick and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me," I remember being taught this phrase in elementary school. A simple line that diminishes the impact and hurt of just how much words can change your perception of not only life but yourself as soon as they're said. Monica Lewinsky knows this all too well.
Cyberbullying. "The use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature". Monica Lewinsky learned this term first-hand when threats and unkind words were pinned against her as news of her affair with Bill Clinton came out in the early 1990s. In her talk, Monica Lewinsky speaks about her personal experience with cyberbullying and the effect it has played on her life. This talk opened my eyes to just how much actions can impact not only you but everyone around you. As Lewinsky spoke about her mother and how her mother feared for her daughter's life every day it made me realize how much words can hurt not only the person being told them but their whole family.
Monica Lewinsky was only 22 years old when she got involved with Bill Clinton who was 49 years old in 1992. This shows how much power and dominance he had over her, he was male, 27 years older than she was, married, had a daughter, her boss and the president of the United States. Additionally, after news broke out in 1998 Monica lost more than he did. He remained president till 1998, kept his wife and his main issue was "bad press" during the whole thing. In 1998, Clinton ended a televised speech in late January 1998 with the statement that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky." On the other hand, Monica Lewinsky was being called terrible names and slut-shamed and at times felt like ending her life.
For the same mistake, both parties got two very different outcomes. Bill Clinton wasn't called a slut or cyberbullied to that extent, and when news came out he denied it at first. In an interview that he gave just last month, he opened up more personally about the situation. He blamed "anxiety in office" for what he did.
Last October, Lewinsky spoke on the Today Show about how she turned her own pain and suffering into an anti-bullying campaign to help others who might suffer from online bullying as well. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVRq3NSpQRo)
