Voices and Choices

During class on Monday I was expecting an entirely different discussion than we ended up having. I went into the class expecting Mr. Robertson to talk about the shallow differences between male and female languages. However,  Mr. Robertson went into deep detail of less noticeable differences. For example, he discussed the differences of curse word that insult each gender. I had never thought of putting a gender connotation on swear words before this class. The word bitch is what guy will use to insult another man's weakness, however, the origin bitch is a term to refer to a female. We also broaden the discussion to speak about the tone of voice. For example, we talked about assertion or lack there of. We analyzed that women ultimately are told to not use assertion in speech because it condescends the male in a conversation. Whereas the male must be stern and assertive to anyone he talks to.

Later, we determined- according to the second grade stories that were given to us to read prior to Monday' class- that boys are drawn to write about violence, war,  heroes, and use no female protagonists. Now looking back on my second grade class, I remember describing my male classmates stories as harsh and scary. I never liked either reading or writing about death, violence, or war. In second grade I wrote mostly about animals and dresses and princesses. I think it is also interesting to refer to the LGBTQ+ community when it comes to something in the gray area like this topic. Many different people of that community choose if they want to change their voice and language according to how they identify their gender. Although it doesn't seem like a huge change to one's life but if you really look into it it is life changing and ultimately changes your behavior.

Evidently, language plays a substantial role in one's life depending on how you use it. People form first impressions from your language and tone of voice, so your language determines your first layer of your initial personality. One's language really shows what kind of person you are regardless of your sex.
