Ms. Finch's lecture on Monday was different to me than most of our other lectures this quarter. She was very interactive with use and always asked our opinions on the subject. Also asking us to keep going and explaining our opinion. We discussed women in literature, which is something that I hadn't put much thought into, outside of class discussions and this lecture. There were many books that I have read and talked about throughout my time at Govs, so remembering a lot of them was hard. After seeing the long list of books that each class has read for each subject, one of the books that I remember having the most impact through women was The brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
In this book the main character, Oscar had trouble with his self-confidence because of the pressure of his surrounding society. He was a chubby, ugly and unattractive guy which was not what you wanted to be in his community. In order to have power and social status, you had to be the guy who got all the women and was sexually active. This was hard for him because he couldn't get any girls and that made him feel powerless. This was interesting to me because it showed how mistreated women can be around the world and how it can show up in literature. It was not right that women were used to help men gain power in their society.
We also talked about our time at Govs and what we've learned about feminism, which was very interesting for me to listen to. Lots of us talked about our experiences before Govs and how others made it seem bad to be a feminist and stereotyped what a feminist was. I would agree with the others that said it was looked at as bad to call yourself a feminist. I would never hear guys or girls call them selves feminist very often because of the perception it gave off to others. Over my time at Govs and taking this class, I have learned that being a feminist is believing of thee equality of both sexes, which would make most people feminists. So, I would be considered a feminist.
