Ms. Finch's lecture on Monday was very interesting. I enjoyed it because instead of a typical lecture consisting of us listening to what the speaker has to say about a certain topic concerning feminism, she had us do some hands on activities. It was fascinating to hear about how other people interpreted women's perceptions in specific books that we've read at gov's. I had never really thought much into how women are portrayed in literature. Prior to this lecture I never really thought that literature had an affect on how I see women, but after this talk I realized how much power literature has on people's perceptions. Something that we didn't get a chance to talk about on Monday was specific genres of literature that have power on people's views on women. I believe that children's books have a great deal of power on adolescent's perception of women. If a child reads book after book that portrays women as inferior to men, than they are going to believe that this is true. It is hard to change somebody's perception of something after they have grown up believe in something their whole life.
It was also very interesting when we talked about how our perceptions of feminism has changed since before gov's till now. Like most in our class, before coming to govs if somebody were to ask me if I were a feminist, I would've responded with a laugh followed by a passionate no. Govs does a great job of providing a sense that feminism in the norm here. Also feminists aren't perceived as the stereotypical crazy lesbian lady. Now I define a feminist as somebody who supports equal rights concerning genders. I like many others here, fall under that category.
