Jill Ker Conway

Before Mrs. Robisceck’s presentation I did not know who Jill Ker Conway was, and naturally, I googled her due to my curiosity. And the first 7 google suggested searches when you type in her name are; books, husband, Nike, quotes, when memory speaks, marriage, and family. After hearing Mrs. Robisceck’s presentation I understand the wide span of seemingly random top google searches. She faced such adversity in her life, from being on the board of Nike and other corporations to be the president of Smith College, she was a powerful woman in a man's world. I am sad and disappointed that such great role models are forgotten in history, as students don’t learn about a great woman like Jill Ker Conway in history class, solely due to her gender. Which reminds me of all the untold stories of women in history.

I appreciated how Mrs. Robisceck gave historical background, giving context to what was happening around Jill, while she was accomplishing such feats. It put her accomplishments into perspective as the rest of the world still had woman spending 55 hours a week on household chores, and their only task was to maintain the house while the husband was at work. It makes me think about how far we have come as a nation on woman rights, but at the same time how much farther, we have to go to. Obviously, Mrs. Conway accomplished a great deal in her life in a professional sense, I am very interested in her book on her struggles going to an elite boarding school after growing up on an Australian farm all her life. This transition must have been very difficult, being so far from home, and adjusting to a new demographic of people. Learning what made her so strong, leading to such an accomplished career.
