2nd Wave feminism

Monday's lecture was very interesting to me and was able to broaden my knowledge about feminism. This time we talked about 2nd wave feminism and roles women had.  This time of second wave feminism happened between the 1960's-1980's and the movement was to help strengthen women's roles in all aspects of society.  The second wave was a different movement from the first, which was more meant to give women the right to vote.  The second wave had a different goal for women, and that was to strengthen women's rights not only with voting, but also with sexuality and in the workplace.  They wanted to change the way women were looked akin society, and show everyone that they are just as capable as men are.

We were able to watch different video clips of tv shows and commercials of this time that gave us a perspective on what people were exposed to during this time.  Prior to this movement we always saw women being portrayed as a typical housewife, who would stay at the house with the kids to take care of them, clean the house and do the chores.  The goal of this movement was to show the world that women are much more capable than just taking care of the house and kids.  This is something that some women like to do, but not all want to be placed in that role.  It was interesting to hear about how women were looked down upon for not being happy with their "perfect life" that included having a nice house, handsome and rich husband and kids.  Even though these women had privilege in their life, it didn't always bring happiness because they would get bored.  They were getting bored with sitting around the house and wanted to get in the workplace and make a living of their own.

During this second wave of feminism we were able to see this advertisement of women change to show them in more powerful and prominent roles in society.  This lecture was meaningful to me because it showed me how the media can shift peoples opinions and how it can give different perceptions to a specific group.  Women were being betrayed in ways that were degrading and put them in specific boxes that was not fit for all the bright and intelligent minds that these women possess.  TV and media can be very influential to people and what is seen everyday can affect how others think of each other for good and bad.
