Watching Reversing Roe brought up a whirlwind of emotions. I am a person who is pro-choice, and I respected those who chose to be pro-life due to faith, but watching Reversing Roe and seeing the extent that some people will take this faith was absolutely disturbing. The images of people harassing patients (because they are clinical patients after all) as they enter clinics, screaming biblical passages is extremely ironic. As a woman of faith, although God has his opinions on abortion and what many call "murder", much of his teachings have to do with following by example and allowing others to have their own paths to the Lord, so showing up to clinics and screaming Bible passages at others and forcing religion upon others is going against the Lord just as much abortion is allegedly doing. I was appalled at the irony of people who claimed to be pro-life killing abortionist doctors. It is absolutely crazy how something like faith, something so spiritual and non-violent will push people to be so opposite of what they claim to live by; murderers of murderers. In full transparency, I do not believe I will ever be able to have an abortion myself, but I fully respect and will advocate for the woman who does choose to have an abortion. The simple fact that this has become a political issue is absurd to me. How can something that pertains to a woman's body, her constitutional right to privacy, become something that is decided by politicians? Politicians are not doctors. Regardless of opinions, the simple fact that this right is grounded in our constitution means that this right for women to chose is something that can never be touched, may be altered, but never taken away, as we saw in the multiple SCOTUS cases that were brought to attempt to reverse Roe v Wade.
It is disproportionately white males who are pushing for these pro-life/anti-abortion bills (not to say other groups of people do not believe this as well). Many of these politicians are the opposite of religious so I am attracted to an argument that was made repeatedly during the documentary; anti-abortion white males simply want control over women's bodies to maintain the patriarchy. It is hard to believe that someone like Donald Trump, who constantly objectified women, is attracted to abortion due to faith. I want to acknowledge the "they're killing unborn babies" argument. Okay, pro-lifers, point one. Yet, I also want to point out the fact of how this selflessness for human life does not always apply. Most pro-lifers are Republicans who are also advocates for the death penalty. Interestingly, Republicans want to assure life and remove life. Hypothetically, if every baby that is conceived wasn't aborted we would be overpopulated, and I am sure that would then become an issue for the government and "murder" would be the answer. Hot take, I know. The hypocrisy is what kills me, though. I like to entertain the argument of the pro-life movement and think about every detail, and how the views often contradict each other. Pro-life seems to apply some of the time, which honestly is not pro-life. It is simply a convenient pro-life to maintain the patriarchy and the control of a women's body. The most disappointing part of this movement are the women who are forerunners fighting the same fight as their male counterparts.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge why I am pro-choice. I live in a town that lacks sex education with teen pregnancy rates that are higher than most cities in the US let alone in the state. Resources are already lacking, but if anti-abortion bills were to take place, not only would this remove abortion, but it would also remove any sex education or even use of contraceptives such as birth control. Meaning that this also limits the women's right to have sex, unless she wants a baby in return (this, of course, applying to those who engage in intercourse with the opposite sex penetratively). Limiting sexuality of women is something I will not stand for. I would also hate for a woman to bring an unwanted child into the world, which often is the source of crime due to their unwantedness at birth regardless of the reason (emotionally, financially, etc.). I also cannot fathom having to think about the number of babies produced in incest or rape that are going to be forced to be had by the victim for the purpose of saving a life. It is disturbing. 1 in 4 women exercise their right to abortion, and 25% more babies, is an issue America is not ready to talk about.
