Women in the World of Photography

Photography used to be a very male-dominated field of work. Lately more women have been breaking into photography and becoming successful, there's still room for improvement, but it has become much better than it used to be. Sara Krulwich's story captures how challenging becoming a photographer was for women. She dealt with insults and sexual harassment, one person even told her hiring a woman would be like "hiring half a person."

Since Sara Krulwich the world of photography has had more women break through. One new idea circulating around photographers is the discussion of the 'male gaze'. The term describes the idea that women in photos aren't depictive of actual women and just represent what men want to see. One response to this is by having more portraits of women where they look directly into the camera. On top of that photos of women taken from 'the male gaze' is being changed because women are becoming more prominent in photography. Now its women taking photos of women

Rania Matar takes photos solely of women. She captures images of women from preadolescence to adulthood. She plays a role in the changing of women's roles in photography. Not only because she herself is a prominent photographer of some notoriety, but her subjects are all women. Her photos capture women from around the world just as they are in their everyday life.
