Women in Liturature

Ms. Finch's lecture gave me a new lens through which to view my experiences with literature. More importantly, however, it challenged me to apply this lens more often, and more carefully, to consider how women are portrayed in less obvious situations.  For example, I may read Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's We Should All Be Feminists with a very different manner than Hamlet or Montana 1948. I was truly surprised that these books shaped my colleagues' views on feminism and women, but upon further thinking, I realized I may be over-compartmentalizing my ideas on feminism. While it is necessary to suspend some of one's own beliefs when reading an older text, it still is important to at least consider, with the time period in mind, the portrayal of women, how they are treated, and how power is given or taken from them.
