Photography

Art is all on the audience and how they portray the piece of art. Mr. Oxton talked about how men and women may take pictures of women but they are two completely different types of pictures. I thought Becca made a very good point in that males when they take a picture of  a women it is most likely sexual while when a women takes a picture of a women it is sensual. I thought that was a very good way to describe the difference that can be seen in photos.
The male gaze has been talked about in class many times and this past Monday had made me open my eyes even more. I realized there was a difference when Mr. Oxton showed us side by side comparison of women photographers and their pictures of women and men's pictures of women. The women when taking the picture did not make the women in the photo deemed to be sexual more powerful. In the men's pictures they are depicted as more of an object in the screen rather than sending a message of empowerment. The way men and women take pictures is different but I also feel that if we know who the photographer is then there is a prejudice to the picture to begin with. If i looked at a picture taken by a male of a women then I assume sexuality is the main part of the photo. While if a women takes a picture of a women I think of more community and self enrichment. There are many ways to look at pieces of art because they can mean so many things and it its what is important to you in it. Whom that takes the picture or makes the sculpture or makes that painting I think should be appreciated for their work that they have done. Everybody is going to take different pieces differently and analyze them differently. When a women makes a photo it should not be compared to a photo of a man. They should both be looked at and appreciated just based off the fact that they put in the time to make such a wonderful piece.
